Hello Calgary Acupuncture Enthusiasts!
Back pain is the number one complaint in both my Airdrie Acupuncture and Calgary Acupuncture clinics. Back pain has no barriers or boundaries, it can affect any person at any point in their life. For most people it is a short term, acute problem, easily resolved in as few as 2 or 3 treatments and taking care not to aggravate the problem until it has healed. For others (this is usually the people that end up in my office) they have chronic back pain, sometimes for most of their life.
Chronic back pain can be mild, moderate or severe and can be constant or can come and go based on activity or work load. Chronic back pain is a little bit more difficult to treat and requires more involvement on the part of the patient to get lasting results, ie exercises and stretching on a regular basis. The acupuncture treatment for chronic back pain involves addressing all the various muscular imbalances, energetic blockages and any internal imbalances that can contribute to back pain and muscle tension. I often also recommend some dietary changes that include anti-inflammatory foods and avoidance of foods that contribute to inflammation (such as sugar).
Good posture is another fundamental issue that needs to be addressed in anybody with back pain, chronic or acute. You can ask yourself these questions:
- is my back straight when I sit? Stand?
- am I consistently crossing my legs, especially one leg?
- am I slouching?
- do I lock my knees while standing?
- do I lean on one leg while standing?
- am I leaning backwards? forwards? or am I twisted?
If you can’t figure out your own posture you can either ask your Calgary acupuncturist to examine your posture or you can take a picture of yourself standing in front of a blank wall and see if you can spot any differences side to side.
